In the Garden of Weeia

When the Unelmoija and her sister dropped Ernie off at Harry’s house near Portland, Maine before vanishing into time, they hoped to give him a fresh start. Unfortunately, Ernie, a lanky shy man with a natural gift for technology and gadgets enhanced by his superhuman Weeia abilities, fell in with the wrong crowd. Left holding the bag for a crime he did not commit, Ernie is sentenced to the Weeia equivalent of public service, doing grub duty at the Marshals Academy, where the Weeia super cops are trained to keep the superhuman race hidden. Breaking the rules there is not a good idea, but Ernie cannot resist a good challenge, never realizing he will be swept up in the middle of a sinister plot that could cost him his life.

Have you been eager to read more about the Weeia after the end of the Unelmoija Series? Synopsis

Gypsies, Tramps and Weeia
Sworn to protect the secrets of their race, marshals are trained to police Weeia hiding among humans.

After completing her advanced marshal training, Danni is blown away by her new plum assignment to Paris. But, all is not well in the City of Lights; the offices are a shambles, her boss is apathetic, and her predecessors died under mysterious circumstances; it’s almost like somebody doesn’t want the law there. Despite that she risks her life in the seedy underworld of gypsies and tramps to search for a missing Weeia man.

Weeia, the superhumans among us

Have you ever wondered how it is that some people stand head and shoulders above others in their work? Maybe you admire a celebrity singer, guitar player, chef or dancer. Perhaps the person you noticed is not known outside his or her field of expertise. It could be anyone, a dog walker who has a knack for understanding what’s going on with your pet pooch; a color adviser at the hardware store able to match any color to perfection; a dive master who can do things in the water you thought impossible; or maybe an athlete who breaks world records.

The Weeia (pronounced way-yah) are like you or me in almost every way except that they have superhuman abilities. They live hidden among us unnoticed. It could be your neighbor, banker, boss or doctor, even a person you’ve known all your life. Chances are they’re not because most of them live in secluded neighborhoods or small towns.

From time to time a few Weeia choose to live with people, usually in big cities where they’re most likely to blend in with the crowds. The abilities of Weeia among us are always explained away. They look like us; they hurt and bleed like we do. Test their DNA. Go ahead. You won’t find anything extraordinary.

Their super abilities vary by type and strength. They fall into four main categories: Emotional, Material, Mental, and Temporal. Weeia, it’s the same word for one or many, can be Lowes, Medius or Maximus depending on how strong an ability they have. Lowes is the most common which might explain how extraordinary beings have lived on the same planet with ordinary ones for a long time without anyone, or hardly anyone, discovering their existence.

There are multitude abilities among the Weeia, some common and some rare. For example, there are Weeia who can move so quickly no one sees them. Others heal very fast. Some can read people’s thoughts; pick up impressions from inanimate objects; or move things with their mind. There are those who have the ability to influence people and issue commands that must obeyed without fail. Rare Weeia control reality through dreams or travel in time.

How can you tell if someone is Weeia? You can’t. Because so few Weeia exist among billions of humans they protect their identity fiercely. Weeia’s most sacred law forbids revealing their existence or abilities to humans on penalty of death, to Weeia and human.

Weeia abilities first manifest in young adults. Something strange is happening and the most recent generation is not developing abilities the way they should.

Amy McKnight is an exception. Raised as a human, she discovers her true Weeia nature without warning or preparation. She’s a quick study, but her life is turned around when she begins having odd dreams that are much more than she could ever imagine.

Author Spotlight: Elle Boca
by Amy R. Biddle

elle-boca-1

If you had a writing motto what would it be?

Life is too short to read (or write) bad books.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

It’s all around me – among people, places, nature, the news and situations I observe.

What is one interesting fact about you?

I love nature and wildlife and strive to include something about nature or animals in every book, although in urban settings like Paris that sometimes posses a challenge. For example, in my Miami urban fantasy series the characters swam with dolphins and manatees. In Paris, the River Seine which crosses the city, is frequently in the backdrop.

Have you learned anything from the self publishing process and would you do anything differently next time?
It’s wonderful to be in the driver’s seat even if it means a great deal more work than with the traditional publishing route. I would start earlier in the process.

What has been your most successful marketing strategy?

Marketing is one of the biggest challenges in the crowded publishing and indie publishing space. This is especially true for new and indie authors. The last Goodreads giveaway for Gypsies, Tramps and Weeia, book one of the Marshals Series, received more than 800 domestic and international sign ups.

What is the best kept secret you have found in regard to indie publishing?

How supportive fellow indies are of each other’s work and how many want to read and highlight the work of indies whenever possible.

Ernie Unlocks the Plot

Richard Bunning

This is a light weight novella, which I think is aimed primarily at secondary school level. That doesn’t mean that adults that enjoy Hogwarts and Narnia won’t enjoy reading about Weeia. The lively little story kept me well entertained, though this sort of fantasy is no longer exactly my thing. I would have been a very enthusiastic reader it my early teens.

There is certainly some originality in Boca’s characters and at least in this book their superpowers are kept almost in the bounds of the possible. That was perhaps why Boca suggested that if I really was going to get off my backside to buy and read any of her already well reviewed books I might be best starting with this one. By the end, I was left wanting to know a great deal more about the only stone-cold character. Perhaps in a next in series the minerals of that magnetic personality softens. We seem to be in an almost contemporary fantasy world, as is Harry Potter, Ernie could pop around to see you the reader. However, Boca has developed her own mythology to weave her stories into rather than merely reinterpreting well-worn fantasy ‘lore’.

The book is well enough written, into a quickly paced short read. There are editing errors, as there nearly always are, but not enough to agitate even my glacially slow reading rhythm, which is inclined to pause on every other word. What a relief to find a real series that isn’t fixated on the ‘undead’ of some sort or other.

I won’t ever be in the Boca fan club, but I do like her parallel race idea, which though certainly not original is developed in an original way. For some strange reason I was reminder of a 1968 TV series about ‘humans’ given superpowers: The Champions. Um- there is no real connection to Boca’s urban fantasy- unless the Champions were helped from their crashing plane by Unelmoija (Dreamer). Except that perhaps there is, because both that half-forgotten TV series and this book worked by keeping a close contact with real, every day, life. It is the very ordinariness of the characters that make some fantasies work.
